Yoga before bed, can be the perfect way to wind down and put your body in great positioning for a good nights sleep. Here are three poses that will relax your body and release any anxiety, tension, or stress before you put your head to the pillow. Next time you find yourself unable to sleep try these poses and it will not only relax your body it will relax your mind as well!
Pigeon Pose : You can actually perform this pose on your bed or on the floor if it is better for you. Really focus on inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
Here is a great tutorial from Mind Body Green on how to do pigeon correctly and get the most out of the pose.
Lying spinal twist: Lie on your back and bring both knees in toward your chest. Bring your hands out to your sides and draw your knees up and over to your left side. Keeping your shoulder blades on the ground, rest your knees on top of one another. Take deep breaths the entire time. When changing sides (after holding for 30 seconds), make sure to use your core to bring your legs back to center.
This stretch helps lengthen and realign the spine, increases flexibility in the hips and low back, and helps to stimulate the digestive system.
This is another stretch that can be performed on your bed or if you are more comfortable on the floor.
Easy Forward Bend
Keep your seated position and gently bend forward at your hips and let your hands stretch out straight in front of you on the bed. This will feel good in your hips and your back. With this stretch you will be able to get a good nights rest and not wake up with aches and pains.
I would perform these stretches as a night time ritual and see the wonderful benefits that they will lead to.
